UTV Helmets

UTV Helmets Article from America's Motor Sports Madison

UTV riding is great in all kinds of situations, from recreational pleasure rides through the woods or over the prairie to work site jobs that require rugged transport able to haul a lot of cargo. While side by sides are a very popular vehicle style that have supplanted traditional cars in some situations, they are still risky to ride. That’s why it’s important for you to invest in protective safety gear when riding in a UTV, and the most important piece of gear you’ll get is a helmet. If you’re not sure what kind of helmet to get, then read this guide provided by America's Motor Sports Madison. Our dealership has locations in Madison, Nashville and Dickson to serve all our Tennessee customers.

Why Wear A Helmet?

A UTV has a steering wheel, four wheels and seat belts, just as you’d find on a car. Unlike your passenger vehicle, though, UTVs don’t have sides or roofs, leaving you vulnerable to injuries. Not only can you get scraped up by branches, but if you have an accident and your UTV rolls over, you’re likely to be thrown from the vehicle. The rollover protection cage on a side by side generally serves to protect the vehicle itself more than the passengers, so you’ll have to protect yourself. Head injuries are serious safety threats, which is why wearing a helmet while riding in a UTV is so important.

Types of Helmet Available

There aren’t really any UTV-specific helmets available on the market, but there are a few options that will work very well for this type of powersports riding. Motorcycle helmets are very protective and meant for riding in the open air, but they can prove hot and cumbersome when riding in a slower UTV. If you want protection that’s lightweight but solid, look into motocross helmets. These helmets are rated for high-impact, extreme riding conditions, so they’re perfect for UTV usage. Avoid half helmets at all costs and never try to use a normal bicycle helmet. You need something strong and durable for riding on a motorized vehicle that’s open to the air.

Fit & Comfort

Not only is good fit important for maximum protection ability, but your helmet also needs to be comfortable. A comfortable helmet is one you’ll be willing to wear, which is what safety gear is all about. Your helmet shouldn’t feel too loose or too tight -- a little pressure when you put it on is acceptable, but you shouldn’t have to wedge yourself into the helmet, nor feel any pain when you wear it.

Goggles or Facemask?

If your helmet has a facemask on it, then great -- you’re covered against any flying debris that could damage your face, particularly your eyes. Facemasks offer the most complete form of protection. The only drawback to facemasks is that they can fog up as you ride. If your helmet lacks a facemask, you’ll need to invest in a good, well-fitting pair of goggles that fit well with the helmet you’ve chosen. You can get goggles with UV tinting, anti-fogging lenses and ventilation. The bonus is you’ll look pretty cool as you ride while wearing them!
