Honda® describes the CTX1300 as "an entirely new motorcycle species", part bagger, of course, but also part commuter, part weekend tourer, part everyday fun ride, and even a little bit sport-tourer. Its 1261cc, 90-degree V-4 engine is touted to deliver the kind of power that can handle those diverse chores without a hitch. Ambitious claims, to be sure, but based on a one-day ride over a wide variety of roads during the 1300's press launch, the big CTX does a fine job of living up to them. The ergonomics are spot-on, positioning the rider's body parts right where they like to be—knees at a 90-degree bend, arms extended comfortably, hands at a natural angle, seat low enough (28.9 inches unladen) to get feet flat on the ground. The deep-dish saddle doesn't allow the rider much fore-and-aft movement, but it's well-shaped and sufficiently wide to provide good support. The tiny windscreen atop the half-fairing allows onrushing air to hit the rider just below the neck, but that air is virtually free of turbulence.

Once you're underway, you'd swear the CTX is a whole lot lighter than its claimed 732-pound wet weight. Credit some of that to the low seat, some to Honda® having put most of the 5.1-gallon gas tank's volume beneath that seat, but most to the V-4's fore/aft crankshaft orientation. That allows a narrow crankcase that lets the heavy engine sit low enough to net a low center of gravity. The wheelbase is long (64.7 inches) and the steering geometry not especially quick (28.1 degrees, 4.6 inches of trail), yet the 1300 turns eagerly, helped by leverage provided by its wide, swept-back handlebar.

All of this makes for an easy-to-ride, non-intimidating large motorcycle, a wonderful quality further enhanced by the engine's outstanding power delivery. The dohc V-4 is based on that of Honda's discontinued ST1300 sport-tourer but extensively retuned for added bottom-end and midrange grunt, and for a deeper, more aggressive exhaust note.

From just above idle all the way past the 6,900-rpm redline to the 8000-rpm rev limiter, the engine streams stout, ceaseless torque. It pulls steadily from as low as 1,800 rpm and accelerates the CTX with authority at practically any road speed without a downshift. It's an impressive show of torque that often makes shifting through the five-speed gearbox seem like a waste of time. Dual counterbalancers allow the engine to be as smooth as silk all through the rpm range.

Underpinning this versatile newcomer is steel-tube, shaft-drive chassis built just for the CTX1300. A 45mm inverted fork provides 4.1 inches of wheel travel while dual shocks yield 4.3. The only suspension adjustment is rear preload, though, a low-tech approach that compromises the ride.

Despite its length, weight and 200-section 17-inch rear tire (mated with a 130/70-18 front), the CTX arcs around corners with surprising ease and confidence-inspiring stability. Triple-disc brakes working with Honda' simplified Combined Braking System give the kind of consistent, predictable whoa-power needed for playing on backroads. The 1300 offers more cornering clearance than a typical cruiser/bagger.
