History

Polaris® powersports began as a venture by Edgar Hetteen, his younger brother Allan, and a close friend, David Johnson. The company was initially founded in 1945, a time when metal was scarce due to the WWII. The group worked out of Roseau, Minnesota repairing farm equipment. It wasn't long before they gained a loyal client following. These founders were also innovators with a dream of finding a better way to trek through the snow to reach remote hunting shacks.

Focus took hold and the group made a prototype snowmobile in 1955. The goal was to prove this machine was more than just a toy, so they embarked on a 1200 mile expedition to Alaska. In order to showcase the pure potential and durability of the snowmobile, they hauled 900 pounds of equipment and food. Surprisingly, the trip took only 12 short days despite enduring below freezing temperatures. The journey successfully proved that their snowmobile was a strong and worthy contender in the powersports world. As a result, Polaris® began to prioritize snowmobile production for several years that followed.

Polaris® Today

Today, Polaris® powersports runs three business divisions, including an off-road vehicles division, a motorcycles division, and a global adjacent markets division with a primary focus on recreational vehicles. They also produce commercial vehicles for use in various industries like hotels, warehousing, universities, and parks and recreation. In addition, Polaris® also crafts specialty vehicles for government agencies, such as law enforcement, fire, and military.
